Watch John Entwistle Talk About Why You Should Never Smash a Bass Guitar

John Entwistle, legendary bassist for The Who, wasn't as keen on busting up the stage at the end of a concert as his bandmates were.

As Entwistle told Conan O'Brien during a 1996 appearance on Late Night, The Ox learned at an early age that smashing a bass guitar isn't easy, and sometimes the bass bites back.

"At the Cow Palace in San Francisco once," Entwistle tells O'Brien," and I hit [the bass] on the stage -- it was a Fender bass -- and it bounced up and hit me in the nose."

"It took 15 minutes to smash it up in complete silence," he added.

In fact, Entwistle says he was more likely to smash a bass while trying to fix it than in some kind of post-concert catharsis.

"I got frustrated screwing the things together and trying to get them to work properly. And if they upset me, I'd smash them up in private.
